The Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2018, stipulates that Chinese officials known to be involved in creating roadblocks for foreign and domestic citizens, officials and media who attempt to visit Tibet and/or are involved in rights violations there will not be allowed into the USA.
In a statement, Pompeo said that access to Tibetan areas is increasingly vital to regional stability, given the PRC’s human rights abuses there, as well as Beijing’s failure to prevent environmental degradation near the headwaters of Asia’s major rivers.
The new law will require the Department of State to report to the Congress annually regarding the level of access Chinese authorities granted US diplomats, journalists, and tourists to Tibetan areas in China.
