Tariff woes

The recent reiteration by President-elect Donald Trump to impose sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China signals a potential shift in US trade and foreign policy.

Imperfect competition

The foreign ministry in Beijing has denounced the legislation as an example of “zero-sum thinking which distorts the facts and smears China’s development path and domestic and foreign policies”.

Jinxed Games

If Japan cancels the event, China would be hosting the Winter Games in 2022 and would then take the credit of hosting the world‘s first international post-pandemic games. Japan would be hesitant to accord that credit to China, which is seen now as a pariah state with its aggressive stances on a host of bilateral and regional issues.

‘A Loveable China’

China may be buttressing its narrative to counter the worldwide reaction to its designs on the disputed South China Sea, allegations of the genocide of Muslim Uygurs in Xinjiang, repression of Tibetans in Tibet and the imposition of Beijing’s security regulations in Hong Kong.

War in peace

These new threats have been identified as addenda and not necessarily to replace the original threats and are aimed to ensure America is ready to face the challenges of the 21st century in war and in peacetime with a comprehensive national security and strategic plan in place.
