US and Taiwan

Indeed the Russian aggression of Ukraine has focused attention on China’s threat to use force to annex self-governing democratic Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory. Circumstances are rather different, however. Taiwan is situated 160 km across the Taiwan Strait from mainland China. It enjoys strong support from the United States, which is legally bound to ensure the island can defend itself and treat all threats to it as matters of grave concern.

How vulnerable is Taiwan?

American author Ted Halstead’s book ‘China Invades Taiwan’ was published in November 2021. It addresses some such pertinent questions. How far would America go to protect Taiwan from Chinese invasion? Would it trigger a nuclear war? How much would Japan be ready to involve itself in combat for the first time since WWII? What would Russia's role be in case China invades Taiwan?

China’s changing role

The consequences of the first major military conflict after World War II were many. A small country Korea lost about four million soldiers and civilians. Five million people became homeless. Even the fall of communism and reunification of Germany could not reunite the two Koreas. Suspicion between the two persists with continuous ceasefire violations and the fact that it continues to be one of the most fortified borders in the world
