In this context, Chief Justice SA Bobde hit the nail on the head when he observed last week while hearing a bunch of petitions in the Supreme Court against the disruption of normal life and activity caused by the farmers’ protests which were referred to a vacation bench: “We make it clear that we recognise the fundamental right to protest against a law. There is no question of balancing or curtailing it. But it should not damage anyone’s life or property.”

A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justice Deepak Gupta was considering the plea of senior advocate RS Cheema, who wanted to be relieved as the prosecutor in money laundering cases.
Representing the West Bengal government in the case, senior advocate Kapil Sibal contended that the apex court must examine if a member of a political party should be allowed to file a PIL.
The plea also sought a direction to authorities to take apposite steps to weed out fake news being circulated about the Act.
