Ministry of Home Affairs ‘postpones’ first phase of Census 2021, NPR exercise amid Coronavirus lockdown

'Census data would be captured through specially designed mobile apps and no documents will be asked from the citizens during the Census-2021,' officials said.
The mammoth nationwide exercise will be carried out in 16 languages and at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore whose data will be collected through a mobile app.
The last census was carried out in 2011 with a population count of 121 crore.
The reference date is 1 October 2020 for Jammu & Kashmir and snow-bound areas of Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand, and 1 March 2021 for the rest of the country
