According to study reports of the Wildlife Institute of India, 90 leopards are in the forests, including in the Gorumara National Park, Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority had on 29 July, 2019 published a report of the fourth cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation2018, and it showed that there is no existence of the animal in the BTR.
Forest officials said that this was the second time that they had released a leopard fitted with the chip, and that the radio collar will help them study the its behaviour. The initiative was taken by the state forest department, in association with the Wildlife Institute of India.
The post-mortem of the carcass was done on the spot where the animal was found dead, while the body was later burnt right there, according to forest sources.
