After more than four years of the first round of cracks and crevices, residents of the subsidence zone in Bowbazar are seeing new rays of hope.
In what comes as a ray of hope for the displaced residents of the subsidence affected zone in Bowbazar, the implementing agency of the ongoing Metro project in the area, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, has finalised the tender for reconstruction of the houses.
The state government has decided to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to each family whose house developed cracks in the Bowbazar area of the city.
While the authorities of the implementing agency are hoping to complete the reconstruction of the damaged buildings by December 2024, the residents are claiming they would thank their stars if the promise is fulfilled.
Kolkata witnessed a similar scenario in Bowbazar where due to Metro tunnelling work, several houses cracked and some even had to be demolished.
The report has further highlighted ground subsidence of 40mm, increasing the risk of collapse of buildings that now are in a precarious state.
The 16.6-km-long East-West corridor, connecting the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, is under construction in Bowbazar.
About 87 residents had to be evacuated and shifted to city hotels in the wee hours after around nine buildings witnessed fresh cracks last night.
"It was communicated to us by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), that we would be able to shift to our home at Bowbazar in June but that also has passed and there are no such signs,"
