Gurung has even set a deadline of August 15 (Independence Day) for the national ruling party to make a formal announcement on this issue.
Gurung, Tamang, Edwards put in efforts to drum up support from other leaders and form common Gorkha platform
“India is still a democratic country and people have the freedom to choose the hospital they want to get treated in,” Mr Raju Bista said.
“Prominent leaders like Bimal Gurung and Anit Thapa have always supported the Trinamul. With Mr Binay Tamang and Mr Rohit Sharma joining the party, the TMC will become stronger. The effect will be seen in near future as many BJP leaders from Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar might join the party
Even though the West Bengal government in 2017 had alleged that Gurung played a role Malik's murder, he was missing from the chargesheet filed in 2018.
"Being the chief minister of West Bengal, had Mamata Banerjee instructed the Police Commissioner to arrest Bimal Gurung from Salt Lake without compromising on anything, her political efficacy, administrative acumen and caliber would have gone far more brighter, and ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, her position would have been more secured," former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pankaj Datta said.
"We welcome Bimal Gurung's commitment to peace and decision to withdraw support from NDA, while reposing faith in Mamata Banerjee's leadership. BJP's attempts to use Gorkhaland issue for petty politics and teir untrustworthy nature now lay fully exposed before people of Bengal," the party said in its official Twitter handle.
The leader of the other faction of the Morcha, Anit Thapa, said that today's development had showed how Mr Gurung had misled the people.
After a day of wide ranging speculations in Kolkata, Gurung officially declared his departure from the NDA in a press conference on Wednesday evening.
