Verdict on Muzaffarpur shelter home case deferred due to lawyers’ strike

A total of 44 girls were victims in the shelter home abuse case, which is currently being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The apex court posted the matter for hearing on June 3 and also asked the probe agency to file a status report before that.
The Supreme had in November last year transferred the investigation to the CBI after the Bihar government failed to handle the case with efficiency.
The case came to light when the Bihar Social Welfare Department filed an FIR based on a social audit of the shelter home conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
Bihar’s social welfare minister Manju Verma, who found herself at the centre of controversy as her husband is believed to have links with Muzaffarpur shelter home, had resigned in August.
Around 34 inmates of the shelter home were sexually assaulted and it was reported that one of the girls was killed and later buried to cover up the murder.
A police team along with department officials visited the shelter home located in the city's Rajiv Hagar area and have interrogated the staff.
Since it took over the probe, this is the first time CBI has conducted a search at the shelter home where 34 minor girls were raped
