In a first, smuggled cattle returned by Bangladesh

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Bangladesh has returned smuggled cattle to India, marking a significant step toward fostering stronger bilateral ties and addressing border crimes along the north Bengal frontier.

Joy Bangla

A variety of reasons have soured Bengal’s relations with Bangladesh, and the euphoric chant of “Joy Bangla” cannot obfuscate reality. Chief among these factors has been the influx, almost relentless, from across the border, indeed a walkover, so to speak, from across the fence, one that was described by this newspaper in 1979 as the “Quiet Influx”.

Let’s nurture and uphold spirit of 1971 war, India tells Bangladesh

''Effective management of our border is key to facilitating economic linkages and people-to-people contact. We need to work closely to strengthen border infrastructure to ensure smooth transit of goods and people while ensuring that illegal activities are kept under check,'' Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said at the 10th India-Bangladesh Friendship Dialogue.

Illegal fishing: 88 Bangladeshis intercepted by ICG

On realising the presence of Indian Coast Guard ship, the boats increased speed and entered shallow waters to evade capture. The ship chased the boats but could not go near due to depth restrictions. Hence, it shared the information with one of ICG's air cushion vehicles operating in area. The coordinated operation resulted in apprehension of three Bangladeshi boats along with 88 poachers.

Linking people through river systems

The Indian government has undertaken the ambitious Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) with an investment of about Rs 4,600 crore for the capacity augmentation of NW-1 (Ganga) for safe and sustainable movement of vessels of up to 2000 tonnes. After the MV Lal Bahadur Shastri's journey, Inland Waterway Authority of India is looking to run regular scheduled services on these waterway routes.
