Bangladeshis since independence are split between those who trust in the solidarity of the Muslim ummah, for whom the break with the Hindu majority in 1947 was more significant than liberation from Pakistan in 1971, and liberal Bengalis who believe their identity with the spiritual, linguistic and cultural ties of West Bengal and India are more important than faith.

After winning four successive elections in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024 in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced by mass protests to resign and flee to India on 5 August 2024.

A chapter in Bangladesh’s history has ended. The family which led the fight for freedom from the shackles of Pakistan and headed it for most part of its democratic phase will no longer have any role in its future.

Of change and chimera

The week that just went by was dominated by news of boiling, burning Bangladesh. The steady stream of reports flowing in from across the border was interrupted with the news of the death of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.
