In a major development, Olympian wrestler Bajrang Punia was appointed the Working Chairman of the All India Kisan Congress on Friday.
The latest development came hours after they met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi a few days ago.
The meeting has intensified rumours that the Congress may field Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia in the Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled to be held on 5 October.
The WFI was suspended immediately after Sanjay, a close aide of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, won the elections.
On May 19, the wrestlers had marched from Jantar Mantar to Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in New Delhi on their 25th day of protest against Brij Bhushan.
Grapplers including Punia, Sakshi, Vinesh and others joined the march demanding the arrest of the WFI chief charged with sexual harassment of athletes
According to an SKM statement on Saturday, on May 7, several leaders of the organisation from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will visit the protest site at Jantar Mantar and extend support to the protesting wrestlers.
"If the honour of the medal is like this, what will we do with this medal? It is better that we lead a modest life and return the medals we have won, to the Government of India.”
