SMC march a test of strength for the CPI-M

The Darjeeling district Left Front has called the march to press for its demand for immediate elections to the civic body. The party also plans to highlight the alleged narrow politics of the Trinamul Congress-led board of administrators (BoA) of the corporation when it came to the Covid-19 vaccination process.

Asok seeks removal of nominated SMC board

The state government has appointed a four-member BoA in the SMC led by Gautam Deb as its chairperson "to handle and contain the grave situation due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic" in May.

He further alleged that employees belonging to Leftbacked unions were being threatened to join the TMC and are being told that they would lose their jobs if they did not support the party.

Mr Bhattacharya also alleged politicization and manipulation of the vaccines, as according to him, some Trinamul Congress leaders helped party people get the vaccines at a time when the common people had been facing problems getting their doses.

With Covid cases, concerns grow in Siliguri

Fifty-eight cases were found in Matigara, 54 in Naxalbari, 16 in Sukna, 10 in Darjeeling Municipality, nine in Kharibari, six in Sukhia Pokhari, four in Phansidewa, three in Mirik, two in Kurseong Municipality, two in Bijanbari and one in Takdah, sources said.

Siliguri talks Asok, Shankar duel

This time around, the constituency is set to witness an interesting battle between CPI-M heavyweight Asok Bhattacharya and his former "disciple" Shankar Ghosh, a BJP candidate, when people vote for them in the fifth phase of the elections here on 17 April.
