The former Punjab chief minister called the Rs 15,000 per acre compensation announced by the government was too less as the losses to farmers demanded that the compensation must be at least Rs 30,000 per acre.
“Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is directly responsible for this. Now the state must come to the aid of the farmers as paddy transplantation rates have gone up from Rs 2,500 per acre to Rs 5,500 per acre. The farmers, who are already reeling under huge labour costs incurred to harvest and sell paddy during the lockdown, are unable to bear this extra cost,” he said.
The five-member Group has been asked to submit its recommendations on destroying any such nexus within 60 days, thus paving the way for the elimination of illicit liquor trade and maximisation of the state’s Excise Revenue, according to an official spokesperson.
The CM also reiterated his intention to contest the next Assembly elections in the state, but said the decision on leading the party rested with the Congress President.
