While the government, including defence minister Rajnath Singh, has defended the scheme, Leader of Opposition in the Parliament Rahul Gandhi has been vocal about the drawbacks of the scheme.
Taking to the microblogging platform X, Sarma emphasized Assam’s dedication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of modernizing the Indian Army.
“It is very unfortunate and deplorable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is doing petty politics even on occasions like paying tribute to martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas. No Prime Minister has ever done this before,” the Congress president wrote on X.
"A section of voters has been upset over the Agniveer scheme. Our party wants those shortcomings which have been questioned by the public to be discussed in detail and removed," senior JD(U) Leader K C Tyagi said.
After the Centre had launched Agnipath and Agniveer schemes in the country, a massive outrage appeared among youths who were preparing for jobs in the armed forces.

According to the published announcement, Agniveervayu would constitute a unique rank in the Indian Air Force, separate from any other existing ranks.
