According to the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was in a remote mountain region northeast of the state capital Boise.
This was the third seism above magnitude six to hit the region in less than two weeks.
More than 100 people were also injured and at least 15,000 people had to evacuate because their houses were damaged by the strong jolt, Wibowo said.
The quake struck about 37 kilometres offshore northeast of Ambon in Maluku province at 8:46 am local time, at a depth of 29 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
