Country's two teams, India A and India C, will lock horns in a crucial seventh-round match in the open section at the 44th Chess Olympiad here on Friday.
The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Governor RN Ravi also attended the opening ceremony along with Union Sports minister Anurag Thakur.
Union Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Jesingbhai Chauhan and Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Department, Government of Tamil Nadu Thiru Siva V Meyyanathan were present on the occasion.
The torch will travel to 75 iconic locations across the country in 40 days before arriving in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai.
The relay will cover a total of 75 cities, commemorating the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav - 75 years of India's independence.
Earlier in the day, the torch reached Chandigarh, where it was received by Governor of Punjab Banwarilal Purohit and then it travelled to Patiala, being received by Principal Secretary, Sports and Youth Services of Punjab, Raj Kamal Chaudhuri.
India is set to host the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai from July 28 to August 10 this year and in a bid to promote the sport across the country, the Chess Olympiad torch relay is being organised across 75 cities in India.
The torch will travel through 75 cities over the course of 40 days before arriving in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. The Chess Olympiad is being held in 189 countries.
FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to the Prime Minister, who in turn handed it over to Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. This torch will be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram near Chennai.
