“We are happy to bring world-class tennis back to Mumbai after a few years. The WTA Mumbai Open has previously drawn some major names and rising players, like two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, who won her first WTA USD125K title right here in Mumbai in 2017,” Sanjay Khandare and Pravin Darade, both IAS and members of the organizing committee, explained.
There will be four wild card entries, to be announced later.
Three top-100 players, Kayla Day of the United States, Nao Hibino of Japan, and Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia, will compete in the WTA Mumbai Open on February 5 at the Cricket Club of India (CCI).
The only Indian with a direct entry into doubles is Prarthana Thombare, partnered with Arianne Hartono, a Dutchwoman. It is anticipated that Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale will also compete in the doubles main draw.
