After scoring in the 81st minute to help Real Madrid seal a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League group stage match on Thursday, winger Lucas Vázquez termed the victory essential for the boys’ morale boost.
“We needed a game like this to boost morale, get back to winning ways and find a bit more rhythm in our game,” Vázquez said, as quoted by the club official website.
Facing the German football giants, Real Madrid took the early lead through Borja Mayoral (8’) and Cristiano Ronaldo (12’). However, star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brought Borussia back in the game after he scored successive goals in the 43rd and 48th minute.
Even though Vázquez scored the winning goal for the Spanish side, the 26-year-old was of the opinion that Real Madrid need to recover a bit of consistency and if they keep working hard, the results will come.
“Now it’s time to focus on Sevilla. As for my goal, I tried to bring the ball down, I hit it with the outside of my boot and that gave it the bend to end up in the back of the net,” he added.
The Spanish right winger hailed other goal-scorers Mayoral and Ronaldo, claiming Real Madrid has a lot on display for the league ahead.
“Mayoral scored the opener tonight, he had a great game and I’m thrilled for him. We knew that a goal for Cristiano tonight would mean he had scored in every group game and I hope he keeps on breaking records,” Vázquez said.
