Wayne Rooney scored a 30-yard thunderbolt in Everton’s first pre-season game, helping the Toffees beat Nigerian side Gor Mahia, and said he felt "great" to get off the mark on his return to the boyhood club.

Rooney, an Everton academy product, moved back to Merseyside from Manchester United on Sunday and showed fans that he isn't done yet with a stunning goal that gave Everton the lead.

Mahia equalised soon after Rooney’s epic strike but Everton youngster Kieran Dowell scored a winner nine minutes from time as the Toffees got their pre-season off to a winning start.
