Sub-junior Men’s Nationals: Odisha beat Mumbai to qualify for quarterfinal

Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Hockey Odisha secured their places in the quarterfinals of the 8th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2018 (A Division) on Tuesday after finishing on the top two positions in Pool D, respectively.

In a Pool D match, it was Hockey Odisha that defeated Mumbai School Sports Association 7-0 to progress to the Quarter Finals of the competition. Hockey Odisha put up an attacking display to score their first goal through Niranjan Kindo in the 10th minute and took an impressive 3-0 lead at the end of the first half. The second half was no different as Hockey Odisha scored four more goals to win the match 7-0. Goals for Hockey Odisha were scored by Matiyas Dang (24′, 44′), Sunil Jojo (43′, 60′), Sushant Toppo (18′) and Liban Ekka (63′).

In Pool A, Delhi Hockey beat Hockey Maharashtra by a scoreline of 6-3 to secure a consolation win in the competition after having lost all three of their previous encounters. Delhi Hockey scored three goals in the first half to stamp their authority on the match, and added three more to their tally in the second half to make the scoreline 6-0 after the 54th minute.

Hockey Maharashtra tried to make a comeback in the dying stages of the match, but could only score three goals as Sachin Kolekar (56′, 69′) and Aditya Rasala (63′) found the back of the net. Goals for Delhi Hockey were scored by Nitesh (22′, 53′), Manik Phalswal (20′), Lokesh (34′), Vineet Dhyani (39′) and Ramandeep Singh (43′).

In the last Pool D match, Uttar Pradesh Hockey beat Hockey Bhopal 7-1 to top their Pool and secure a position in the Quarter Finals. The match saw Uttar Pradesh Hockey taking a lead in the 7th minute through Uttam Singh but it was pulled back to 1-1 when Hockey Bhopal’s Aman Khan converted a Penalty Corner in the 11th minute. However, Uttar Pradesh Hockey made a strong comeback and scored six more goals to secure a convincing 7-1 victory. Goals for Uttar Pradesh Hockey were scored by Sourabh Anand (18′, 54′), Akhtar Ali (58′, 65′), Sahabaz Khan (30′) while Uttam Singh (69′) bagged his brace.
