In yet another major blow for the Indian cricket team, Shreyas Iyer may be forced to miss the remaining three tests against England due to discomfort in his groin area and stiffness in his back.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet revealed the Test squad for the remaining three matches, and if Iyer is unable to participate, it could pose a significant challenge for India throughout the rest of the series.
According to a media report, Iyer is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for his injury.
The report suggests that the Indian No. 5 batsman is unlikely to recover in time for the remaining three tests against England and is aiming to return to action during the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he would potentially captain the Kolkata Knight Riders.
This is a massive blow for Iyer, as he recently returned from his back surgery in 2023 and he already missed the IPL 2023 with the injury.
It is understood that if the Mumbai batter misses out, the BCCI will stick around with Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan in the ongoing series.
The Indian team is currently grappling with a surplus of issues regarding injuries and player unavailability. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were absent from the Visakhapatnam Test due to their respective injuries, while Mohammed Shami, who has been dealing with a persistent injury since the World Cup, is not expected to return to action until the IPL 2024.
Additionally, there has been no official announcement regarding the return of former Indian captain Virat Kohli after he withdrew from the team citing personal reasons.
