After being handed a couple of years ban by the ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan stepped down from the World Cricket Committee of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Tuesday.
Notably, the 32-year-old southpaw was banned from all cricket for two years, with one year of that suspended, after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
“Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) can today (Tuesday) confirm that Shakib Al Hasan has stepped down from his involvement with the MCC World Cricket committee,” the club stated in a press release.
The No 1 ODI all-rounder had joined the MCC World Cricket committee in October 2017, and has subsequently attended meetings in both Sydney and Bengaluru.
Commenting on Shakib’s resignation, Chairman of the World Cricket committee Mike Gatting said: “We are sorry to lose Shakib from the committee, where he has made a great contribution over the last couple of years. As guardians of the Spirit of Cricket we support his resignation and believe this was the right decision.”
Talking about the ban on the former Bangladesh skipper, he was found guilty of breaching ICC Anti-Corruption Code and was charged for not reporting corrupt approaches.
Under the provisions of the Code, he chose to admit the charges and agreed the sanction with the ICC in lieu of an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing.
The highest-earning 32-year-old Bangladesh cricketer can only return to International Cricket from 29 October, 2020. This implies that he would miss the Indian Premier League next year and will not be available for selection in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
