Spanish football star Sergio Ramos has now become Europe’s most capped male outfield footballer as Spain played out a 1-1 draw with Norway to edge closer to a confirmed place in the Euro 2020 scheduled to be played in summer 2020.

“All that is personal is a little secondary,” the BBC quoted Ramos as saying after the match on Saturday.

“I would have happily traded this 168th cap for a victory. It was not the case. But this record is a great reward after so many years and it’s a great source of huge pride.

“I am emotional every time I put on this shirt. That will not change and I hope to continue doing so for many years,” he added.

Ramos, who was playing his 168th match for Spain, also broke the record for the most number of appearances for the Spanish football team. He surpassed goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ tally.

In the Euro 2020 qualifier encounter, Spain were held by Norway after a stoppage-time penalty from Joshua King denied them a win in Oslo on Saturday. A victory would have given Rober Moreno’s Spanish side a confirmed berth in next year’s continental event.

However, a draw in Sweden on Tuesday would be enough to ensure they qualify for Euro 2020.
