The Indian Premier League (IPL) has given Indian cricketers a massive platform to exhibit their talent to the world. While it is only the men cricketers who have been reaped immense benefits from the introduction of such a league in India, increasingly there have been talks about the introduction of a women’s version of the IPL, similar to the women’s tournament in countries like England and Australia which run parallel to T20 Blast and Big Bash League respectively.
Although India have managed to reach the finals on a few occasions in ICC tournaments, they just have not been able to get past the final hurdle against a top team. Consequently, the Women in Blue finished second-best in ICC 2017 World Cup as well as the ICC T20 World Cup 2020.
While the results are enough to show India’s steady rise in world cricket, a women’s IPL might just be the platform that can make the Women’s team ready for a world tournament like the Indian Premier League.
Poonam Yadav, the star Indian leg spinner who had a successful show in the T20 World Cup, took to Twitter on Sunday and stated that she would like to bowl for the Chennai Super Kings if given a chance.
“Given a chance, would love to roll my arm over for @ChennaiIPL,” she wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retweeted Yadav’s message and wrote, “Lionesses are the real hunters! Vaa vaa Manjal malarey!”
Yadav ended the Women’s T20 World Cup as the joint-highest wicket-taker with as many as 10 wickets to her credit.
