Ahead of the New Zealand T20Is, the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Tuesday named Gate No. 2 of the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as the ‘Virender Sehwag Gate’.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag was honoured for making the capital city proud with his remarkable batting skills throughout his career.
The 38-year-old Delhi batsman attributed his legendary status to a tough club level one-day cricket that he played day in and out, through a long summer.

“In Delhi, a lot of one-day cricket is played among clubs. And by the time these players come to Ranji Trophy they become very tough mentally and they don’t find it difficult to get used to the grind,” Sehwag said, referring to what sets the Delhi cricket apart.
Sehwag thanked the DDCA and said the move will motivate budding cricketers from the capital city.
“It is a great honour and today we have a gate named after a cricketer but later we can have dressing room, stands, restaurants and dressing rooms and other things named after cricketers. It’s a good thing and positive move from the DDCA.”
“I had a wish that whenever such a function happens, we should call all the cricketers who have represented Delhi and India,” he continued.
Sehwag believes any young cricketer will get motivated after reading his name on the gate. “Virender Sehwag played here as a kid and when he left there is a gate named after him so if I can also play for U19, U16, U23 or Ranji for Delhi and then represent India, then a gate, stand or something will be after my name,” he explained.
In a move that will help many former players, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has revived the pension scheme for all former cricketers who have played less than 25 matches and do not get assistance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
