Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who became the fastest man to reach 300 Test wickets, claimed four wickets in Sri Lanka’s second innings to help India win the Nagpur Test by an innings and 239 runs on Monday.
By the virtue of this victory, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The two sides will next clash in the third and final Test, starting December 2 in Delhi.
Beginning the fourth day 384 behind India, Sri Lanka collapsed midway and were bundled out for paltry 166 runs.
Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal was the lone warrior as he scored 61 runs off 81 balls, facing out-and-out bowling attack at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.
At helm, Suranga Lakmal remained unbeaten at 31, failing to get any support from the other end.
Helping Ashwin in the bowling attack, spinner Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets in Dimuth Karunaratne (18) and Angelo Mathews (10).
Pacers Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav also chipped in with claiming two wickets each in India’s comprehensive win.
Indian captain Virat Kohli was bestowed with the Man of The Match award for scoring a remarkable 213-run knock, with the help of 17 boundaries and two sixes.
This was the fifth double century in Test cricket for Kohli in past 15 months.
