Michael Carrick will be the next Manchester United skipper, the club confirmed as they put to bed all speculation about who would be given the captain’s armband for the upcoming season.

“It feels great and it is such a huge honour to captain such a great club,” the 35-year-old told MUTV.

Carrick joined United from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for an initial fee of £14.8 million and has made over 450 appearances for the Red Devils since then.

“It is my 12th year now and I came as a 25 year old. I never thought I could be here for so long and achieve so much,” Carrick enthused.

United manager Jose Mourinho was said to favour Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera but considering Carrick is the player who has been the longest at Old Trafford after Wayne Rooney’s departure to Everton, the decision is not that surprising.

“I will just be myself, you can’t change and it is wrong to come into the role and then suddenly change, shouting and screaming at everyone, telling them what to do,” Carrick stressed when asked how he will approach captaincy.

Carrick, who signed a contract extension in May that will keep him at the club till June 2018, has always been a calm midfielder, preferring to play his way out of trouble as opposed to lumping it about.

"I am not like that. I will speak when I need to speak, but I am quite laid back and chilled out really. I will try to lead by example,” Carrick added.
