Manchester City’s hopes of a quadruple ended on Monday night as League One side Wigan Athletic knocked them out of the FA Cup but the Premier League giants’ week could get worse after footage of Sky Blues striker Sergio Aguero assaulting a pitch-invader went viral.

Wigan striker Will Grigg struck a 79th-minute winner to send the underdogs into the quarter-finals of the cup competition at the expense of Pep Guardiola’s fancied City side.

All hell broke loose as the full-time whistle was blown at the DW Stadium, with fans overpowering the stewards and rushing to meet the players after a momentous victory, but there were ugly scenes all across.

Advertising boards were ripped off and thrown on the police but the main talking point was Aguero’s altercation with a rival supporter.

As the fan raced across the pitch, he spotted Aguero and apparently said something to the Argentine, who took offence and swung a hook at the man.

Aguero alleged that the fan spat at him, but it remains to be seen whether the FA will take his side if an investigation will be opened into the matter.

City take on Arsenal twice in the span of the next 10 days, first in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, before travelling to the Emirates to take on the Gunners in a Premier League fixture on March 1.

With Gabriel Jesus fit again, City do have options up front, but the loss of their all-time top scorer will be a big one, especially with a cup final bare days away.

Should the FA start an investigation, Aguero is likely to be suspended for a few games at least, as the evidence is incriminating. And no matter the provocation, striking a fan is not acceptable and the administration are unlikely to be sympathetic to the Argentine’s cause.
