Riding on a brace from Sergio Aguero, Manchester City defeated Southampton 3-1 in their Wednesday’s round of 16 clash in the ongoing Football League Cup.
First-half goals from Nicolas Otamendi and Aguero boasted the City’s dominance, and the skipper scored a third after the break to put a final nail in Saints’ coffin.
The moment became even special for Aguero as it was his 350th appearance for the club.
Southampton pulled a late consolation goal, but it was not enough to threaten City and the Citizens eased past to make it to the last eight.
In the 20th minute, Nicolas Otamendi initiated things for the defending champions with a superb header, which was followed by a goal from Aguero in the 38th minute. The 31-year-old forward netted the ball after receiving a pass from Kyle Walker.
And it was the Argentine only who put the game to bed on 57 minutes with his second of the night and his twelfth of the season. He got a slight touch on Riyad Mahrez’s deflected cross to nutmeg Alex McCarthy.
Bernardo Silva cut in from the right before finding Mahrez who then hit a deflected cross towards goal and Aguero expertly guided the ball past Alex McCarthy to make it 3-0.
Meanwhile, Jack Stephens headed a consolation goal for the Saints in the 76th minute, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.
