Mesut Ozil may be enjoying a well-earned summer break, but the German midfielder is keeping tracks of his compatriots' exploits at the ongoing Confederations Cup in Russia and the U-21 European Championship in Poland.

Germany manager Joachim Low decided to rest most of his big stars, including Ozil,Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels among others for the quadrennial tournament in Russia with many young players getting a chance to impress in their stead.

And the likes of Julian Draxler, Joshua Kimmich have impressed indeed, but the fact that the U-21 team has reached the final of the European Championship simultaneously just reinforces the fact that Germany have a deep reservoir of talent to pick from.

The 28-year-old Ozil uploaded an old picture of himself from his U-21 days on his Facebook page with the caption: “Throwback to our U21 tournament win in Sweden 2009! Best of luck to our DFB-Junioren for their big clash against Spain tomorrow & of course all the best for our DFB-Team (Die Mannschaft) in the semifinals vs. Mexico! We can be proud of our next football gen. Der nächste Stern für Deutschland”.

It seems the Arsenal man’s wishes proved to be a good-luck charm as Germany thrashed Mexico 4-1 in the semifinal on Thursday night to set up a date with Chile on Sunday.

The European U-21 Championship final between Germany and Spain takes place on Friday night.
