India batsman Shubman Gill, who was ignored by the selection committee for Team India’s outing to the West Indies despite winning the Player of the Tournament award in the recently concluded unofficial ODI series between India A and the West Indies A, said he was expecting to be selected in at least one of the Indian squads.

Notably, the MSK Prasad-led selection committee on Sunday announced the squad for Team India’s upcoming outing to the West Indies wherein the 19-year-old Gill failed to make a cut.

The promising batsman from Punjab made his ODI debut with the senior squad during India’s tour to New Zealand earlier this year but was unable to impress, making scores of nine and seven in his two ODI outings.

“I was waiting for the Indian senior team to be announced on Sunday and I expected to be selected for at least one of the squads,” Gill told CricketNext. “It was disappointing not to get picked but I am not going to spend time thinking over it. I’ll keep scoring runs and performing to the best of my ability to impress the selectors.”

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has also questioned the selection process and said that both Ajinkya Rahane and Shubman should have been there in the ODI squad for the three-match series against West Indies.

BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad, while announcing the squad, said Gill was discussed at the selection meeting which took place on Sunday. “He went to New Zealand when KL Rahul was suspended and now Rahul has come back so he (Gill) is in the waiting list. Definitely he will be considered in the future (sic).”

India will play 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Test matches against the West Indies starting 3 August.
