Hundreds of enthusiastic and excited equestrian lovers descended at the Army Equestrian Centre in Nicholson Ranges of Delhi Cantonment from across the country for India's most looked upon event of equestrian recently.

The exciting crowed cheered and encouraged top riders of the country during prestigious ‘Delhi Horse Show’ who showcase their best riding skills during Open Show Jumping and other competitions.

Displaying his extraordinary riding skills, Amar Sarin won the hearts of crowed who dealt with extremely tricky triple combination and managed to come clear on his second mount Alasdair which won him the top prize.

The second place, however, was won by Asian Games rider Sehej Singh Virk on Laila and third place again went to Amar Sarin on Summer Rain.

Out of the Army riders, Lt. Col Rohit Dagar of 61st Cavalry on his veteran mount Veer led the way with the second place going to LD Gurpinderjeet Singh of Presidents Body Guard on his beautiful dark bay Vazra .

This year the DHS was organised  from March 26 to April 2 with Tent Pegging, Dressage and Show Jumping events for serious riders to fun gymkhana events for children and teenagers. 

The event witnessed over 500 horses and competitors in action from different parts of the  country in four categories – senior, young rider, junior and children. Over 800 enthusiastic children have also participated in the event.

Since early 20th century, ‘The Delhi Horse Show’ has been one of the major events in equestrian in the country. During the British rule the DHS was one of the important events organized on the yearly basis for which everyone looked and drew participation from different parts of the country. It continued even after Independence until 1979. It was revived in the year 1986 hence  adding to the new dimensions in equestrian continuing year after year.

The DHS is being conducted perennially by the 61st cavalry on behalf of the Indian Army. Equestrian, the otherwise inaccessible sport  has been given a great platform through this show. This is considered as one of the biggest and most popular horse show in the country for the past 31 years. Besides giving a platform for the professional riders, the show is also a breeding ground for the future of equestrian in the country with a wide participation of children of age group 2 to 18 years.

Though the events had started on March 26th, Sunday, April 2nd was the day of grand finale. This was witnessed by the equestrian lovers in the packed stadium who cheered the top 17 riders of the country with their mighty horses in the Open Show Jumping competition. 

Amar Sarin, however, won the Best rider trophy finishing first and third leaving behind 600 horses and 1000 riders. The best Army rider went to Lt. Col Rohit Dagar who gave a remarkable performance in different disciplines.

The Medium Advanced class dressage was however  dominated by the 61st Cavalry which got the top two spots in the event. 61st Cavalry`s Lt. Col Rohit Dagar astride Veer  and Maj. Arjun Patil astride Jericho won the first and the second places while the third place was claimed by RIS Rajpal of the RVC.

Participants included the 61st Cavalry, President’s Bodyguard, RVC, ASC, Army Commands, National Defence Academy, Assam Rifles, Punjab Police, BSF, Delhi Police, MP Police, ITBP and prominent senior civilians. Reputed schools and colleges including Rashtriya Indian Military College, Mayo College, Punjab Public School.
