Burnley vs Manchester United seemed to be petering out towards a sedate end but Marcus Rashford’s sending off has sparked some late drama at Turf Moor.

Rashford entered the tie in the 61st minute as he replaced the tiring Alexis Sanchez, but was given his marching orders within 10 minutes of coming on.

Former United defender Phil Bardsley made a strong challenge on Rashford and while the initial contact was clean and the visitors got a corner, the Burnley man clearly stamped on the young forward in the follow up.

Rashford reacted angrily and attempted to headbutt Bardsley in full view of referee Jonathan Moss and the official had to sort out a melee between the two sets of teams before he could issue a yellow for Bardsley.

With United leading 2-0, they just had to see the match out but it appears that the Red Devils will have a fight on their hands if they are to secure three points on the road for the first time this season.

Rashford got a crimson for retaliation and left United with the difficult task of holding out for the nearly 20 minutes left in the tie.

An automatic red card means Rashford will be suspended for three games, but his ban could get extended should the FA decide extra punishment for his indiscretion is necessary.

The games Rashford is currently set to miss are: Watford (Premier League), Wolves (Premier League) and Derby County (Carabao Cup).
