The four semi-finalists in the category secure Paris quotas from the Busto Arsizio meet.
After losing the opening round, the 23-year-old Nishant, a world championships bronze medal winner, fought back bravely to bounce back in the second round. However, it was the US boxer who took the final round to clinch the bout.
Nishant Dev’s exit also brought down curtains on India’s campaign in Italy with none of the nine Indian boxers managing to secure a quota place.
While Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Deepak Bhoria ( 51kg), Narender Berwal ( +92kg), Sanjeet Kumar (92kg) Lakshya Chahar (80kg) , Jaismine Lamboria (women 60 kg) and Ankushita Boro (women 66 Kg) lost their opening round bouts, Mohammed Hussamuddin (men’s 57kg) exited in the second round.
So far, only four women – Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) – have obtained the quotas for India. All of these came at the Asian Games last year.
Indian boxers will have one last opportunity to obtain quotas for Paris at the second World Qualification Tournament, scheduled to be held in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.
Up to 51 quotas will be up for grabs at the Bangkok meet. India can still obtain nine more quotas in boxing.
