Former West Indies skipper Daren Ganga has spoken about the reason behind the Caribbean team’s downfall in world cricket, and the reason behind their dismal show in the last few years.

There was a time when the West Indies team was a formidable force in world cricket, but the past decade has seen them hit a low in terms of their on-field performances.

In the first Test match of ongoing two-match series in India, the Windies team succumbed to a disappointing and humiliating innings and 272-run loss in Rajkot. After West Indies’ poor show in the opening Test, Daren Ganga shed light on the causes of the decline of Windies cricket.

“When I played my first Test in South Africa in 1998, I played with Ambrose, Walsh, Lara and Hooper, and there was still a lot of pride. Now the young players in this team do not have anyone like that in a position of having been there and done that”, Daren Ganga told The Indian Express.

Ganga also said the current Windies team did not have anyone to look up in the squad. “It’s very hard to mature in an environment where you’re not winning. That’s the kind of depreciation that took place from the 1990s to now. Who does a Shai Hope look to for guidance? Who does Shannon Gabriel turn to when his back is against the wall when his fellow pacers have played 2 Tests between them? It’s like the blind leading the blind in a case of trial and error,” he added.

West Indies team will aim to reclaim some of their pride when they will face India for the second and last Test match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium starting October 12.
