In a recent turn of events, captains will now not be suspended for slow over-rate in International Matches. Instead, the entire team’s points will be deducted from their World Test Championship Points tally.

The rules will come into play with the World Test Championship starting from 1 August with the Ashes Test Series.

This Championship will be played in two-year cycles and the first cycle will end on June 2021.

2 points per over will be deducted

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement that in the World Test Championship the team which is not able to finish its overs in time will be penalised with 2 points per over being deducted from their points tally.

Captain will not be suspended

It comes as a big relief for captains who were the only ones being penalised in case of slow over-rate. As per the new rules, if the team is guilty of slow over-rate on more than one occasion then the captain cannot be suspended. The whole team will be held responsible for that and everyone will be fined equally.

The rules until now suggested that if a team is found guilty of slow over-rate twice in a year, the captain would be suspended.
