Andy Murray has reached his first ATP tour final since March 2017 by defeating Ugo Humbert 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the European Open semifinals in Antwerp. The world number 243 will now face Stan Wawrinka in the final today.

For the Brit, this could well be the biggest moment of his career after making a comeback following his hip surgery in January this year. After being sidelined from the court for much of the last two and a half years, Murray had even decided to retire but is now on his way to the top once again.

After losing the first set 6-3, Murray came back strongly to take the second set 7-5 before having it easy in the final set. The match lasted for 2 hours and 22 minutes and had some typical Murray magic on the show.

“It’s been a long road to get back to this point,” Murray was quoted as saying by news agency Associated Press. “I certainly didn’t expect it to come so soon since I started playing again. It’s been a big surprise to me and I’m happy to be through to the final.”

For Wawrinka, though, it was a much easier affair as he beat 18-year-old Italian Janik Sinner 6-3, 6-2 for a regulation victory. Given bot the players’ recent graph, the Swiss is more likely to win the final but he will be under some pressure as well and just like his opponent, he too has not won any title since the spring of 2017.

“Stan’s a brilliant player. We’ve played against each other a lot in big tournaments. He has had his injury problems as well in the last couple of years. In fact, my last match against him in 2017 was when the problems in my hip really started. I never recovered from that match,” Murray added.
