In a major embarrassment for the recently opened Swedish home furnishings retailer IKEA in Hyderabad, a customer allegedly found a worm in his vegetable biryani served at the famous IKEA food court.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday.

The customer, Abeed Mohammad, informed the Food Safety Officer with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) about the incident and IKEA was slapped with a fine of Rs 11,500. IKEA has tendered an apology.

Abeed took to Twitter on 31 August and posted, “#Ikeahyderbad Today I found caterpillar in my veg biryani. Very unfair of food @TV9Telugu @KTRTRS sir @hydcitypolice @THHyderabad @Abnandhrajyothi.”


He tagged Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao and  Hyderabad police in the tweet. Abeed also added the photos of the Biryani and the insect found in the food.

“We apologize for the unfortunate experience. We are investigating the matter and will take immediate corrective action. At IKEA, we have the strictest guidelines when it comes to food quality as customer health and safety are something we care about deeply,” IKEA said replying to the tweet.

According to media reports, GHMC officials reportedly visited the store on Saturday and collected food samples for bacteriological analysis tests at a lab.

The restaurant manager of IKEA and Haldirams, the Nagpur vendor from which it procures food items to IKEA, have been served notices by the GHMC.
