The World Bank has complimented the Himachal Pradesh Police for making road safety a priority.
An official of the Police Department said here on Wednesday, that presently the World Bank sponsored road safety project is being implemented in Himachal Pradesh.
In the said project road safety consultant agency, ‘Transport Research Laboratory’ team leader Tony Mathew has stated that after analyzing the road crash data and analyzing the report of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the years 2018-2022, there is decrease in road accidents in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
“Not surprising, a comparison of road traffic fatalities in different states in India has shown an increasing trend of road deaths in most of the states, with most of the large states showing double digit percentage growth in road deaths. Himachal Pradesh managed to buckle the general trend with a reasonably impressive reduction in road traffic deaths at around 17 percent,” said Mathew.
Himachal Pradesh emphasized on good quality crash data collection from very early on, and Police are active on crash data management and enforcement, he added.
The World Bank in its report has stated that in the 5 years period from 2018-2022, the GDP of India increased at 25 per cent.
Increased GDP is associated with more vehicle growth, road accidents and fatalities. While in most of the states, the fatalities have increased in the 2018-2022 period, in Himachal Pradesh fatalities have been reduced by 17 per cent.
Himachal Police aims to create a safer road environment and reduce the frequency and severity of accidents, said the police official.
