In 2017, Saibaba and others were convicted by a Nagpur sessions court. The conviction was challenged in the high court, which set aside the sessions court verdict and acquitted the ex-DU professor and five others.
The former professor was earlier acquitted on October 14, 2022 but the Supreme Court set aside that order and asked the high court for fresh hearing in the case.
The Maharashtra government had challenged his acquittal in the Supreme Court.
Pronouncing the judgement today, a bench of justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes set aside the 2017 verdict, saying the prosecution could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
