The BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairperson and YSR Congress leader Y.V. Subba Reddy have approached the Supreme Court seeking a court monitored probe into the allegation of adulteration of laddu prepared at Tirupati temple and given to the devotees.

While Swamy – a BJP leader – has sought a top court monitored probe into the allegations levelled by TDP-led Andhra Pradesh government regarding use of adulterated ghee in preparation of laddus at the Tirumala Tirupati Temple during the previous YSRCP regime, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) appealed the apex Court to take suo motu cognisance of laddu adulteration allegations and order a probe to identify the culprits.

Swamy has also sought direction to the Andhra Pradesh government to file a detailed report on the source and sampling of the ghee used for making the laddus at the temple. He said that the issue ought to have been dealt with within the confines of the TTD. He further said that “the opportunity was seized upon by certain individuals to make a political statement out of the said apparent piece of information which was not in the public domain as on the hour of disclosure.”

The YSR Congress Rajya Sabha member Y.V. Subba Reddy – a former chairman of TTD- has sought a court-monitored probe or the appointment of a retired top court judge to conduct an independent probe into the charges. He has also sought directions to the Central and Andhra Pradesh governments, TTD and Andhra Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu not to ‘publicize or propagate the matter as it is affecting the sentiments of devotees of Lord Venkateswara at large till the enquiry is completed.’

The VHP made the appeal after the meeting of its Kendriya Margdarshak Mandal at Tirupati where it took the decision. It was attended by VHP’s international secretary Bajrang Bagra and others.
