Veteran BJP leader, former Dy CM Bhabhra passes away in Jaipur

Stalwart BJP veteran leader, former Deputy Chief Minister and ex-Speaker of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Hari Shankar Bhabhra passed away on Thursday after prolonged illness here.

He was about 96.

Bhabhra attained the office of the Speaker from 16 March 1990 to 5 October 1994 (two times). He won the state legislative elections in 1985, 1990, and 1993 from Ratangarh in Churu district. He is the one whose leadership enabled the construction of the new assembly building during former CM B S Shekhawat after a long tussle related to its financial situation.

A resident of Didwana, he contested and won from Ratangarh constituency of Churu District. He was also the Dy CM from 6 October 1994 to 1 December 1998. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1978–84.

Bhabhra was the deputy chairperson of Economic Policy and Reform Council in the Rajasthan Government.

Rajasthan’s Governor Kalraj Mishra expressed deep condolences on the demise of Bhabhra.

In his statement, the Governor said that Bhabhra was a veteran politician who had deep faith in parliamentary traditions imbued with the ideas of nationalism.

“He was a strong advocate of accountability towards the common people, governance and purity in politics. His demise is an irreparable loss”, the Governor added.

He has prayed to God to grant peace to the virtuous soul and give strength to his family to bear this loss.

Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, former Speaker Dr CP Joshi and Congress PCC President G S Dotasara condoled the demise of the departed leader.
