UP: First phase poll process begins on Wednesday but parties are yet to announce candidates

With just two days left for the issuance of notification for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh, the two main political factions NDA and INDIA bloc are yet to announce their candidates.

There are reports that the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, main constituents of the NDA and INDIA bloc, could announce the candidates very soon.

NDA partner Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Congress will also contest some seats in phase one.

In the first phase, 8 Lok Sabha seats of Western UP will go to polls where nominations would be accepted from March 20. Polling in the first phase is scheduled on April 19.

UP will cover all the 80 seats elections in seven phases starting from April 19 to June 1 and counting of votes on June 4.

The constituencies going to polls in the first phase in UP are Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina, Moradabad, Rampur and Pilibhit.

In the seats going to polls in the first phase, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party have announced their candidates in four constituencies each.

The BJP is yet to decide on whether to repeat Varun Gandhi from Pilibhit or not. The RLD has also fielded Chandan Chauhan from Bijnor seat.

Similarly, the SP has announced the candidature of Ikra Khan from Kairana, Harendra Mallick from Muzaffarnagar, Yashveer Singh from Bijnor and Manoj Kumar from Nagina.

But no political parties have yet announced candidates for the prestigious seats like Saharanpur, Moradabad and Pilibhit.

In the second phase, the election will be held in 8 seats on April 26 where nominations will be accepted from March 28, BJP, RLD and SP have announced one candidate each.

Hema Malani has been repeated by the BJP in Mathura. RLD has given ticket to Raj Kunar Sangawan from Baghpat and SP has fielded Bhanu Pratap Singh from Meerut.

There are also reports that the SP could change some of its candidates including that in Meerut and other places.
