After the Supreme Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to give a detailed report on the Unnao rape case and road accident on Wednesday, the CBI team investigating the case has found that the truck and the car involved in the accident were “speeding”.

The premier investigative agency found that the truck which crashed into the car carrying the Unnao rape survivor, her lawyer and two female relatives, was moving at a speed of 70 to 80 kmph, whereas the Swift Dzire car was being driven at over 100 kilometre per hour.

As the truck was found on the wrong side, a CBI official said, “This could be intentional since that is how it crashed into the car or it could have skidded due to heavy rains. We are still investigating this.”

The CBI team, which is headed by SP Raghvendra Vats, interacted with the forensic team that reached the site post-accident.

Earlier, family members of the Unnao rape victim, in a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on July 12 had stated that the kin of accused threatened them to settle case otherwise they would be implicated in false cases.

The letter further urged the CJI to take action against those making threats.

The victim’s mother, sister and aunt alleged they were being constantly threatened by the men of the accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

The Unnao rape case hit the headlines in 2017 after the then 16-year-old girl alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Sengar.

Sengar has been in jail since the past several months while the case is being probed by the CBI.

Sengar’s brother has also been accused of beating up the victim’s father after tying him to a tree. Her father was then arrested and later died in police custody.
