Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti announced on Thursday that she would not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Uma Bharti (64) told media persons in Bhopal that she would instead carry on her work for the rejuvenation and cleanliness of the River Ganga. Her announcement came days after her name did not figure in the BJP’s first list of Lok Sabha candidates.

The BJP leader, who was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh from 8 December 2003 to 22 August 2004, however, she was not retiring from politics.

The saffron-clad leader said she would continue to work for the downtrodden.

The BJP dropped another Sadhvi and sitting Lok Sabha member from Bhopal Pragya Singh Thakur from its list of candidates for the upcoming general elections.

Former Bhopal Mayor Alok Sharma has been named the saffron party’s candidate from Bhopal instead of Pragya Thakur, who is also one of accused in Malegaon blast case.
