A Haryana court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to 1996 Sonepat twin bomb blasts case accused, Abdul Karim alias Tunda.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs. 1 lakh on the alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative, who was a bomb expert.

On Monday, the court had convicted Tunda, in twin-bomb blast cases, under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120 B (conspiracy) and under Section 3 of the Explosive Act for the Sonepat blasts.

On December 28, 1996, two separate bombs went off in Sonepat — one in the market area not far from the Sonepat bus stand and another near a cinema — around 15 persons were injured in the blasts. All the victims had survived.

Tunda was arrested by the Delhi Police from Banbasa near the India-Nepal border on August 16, 2013, and is suspected to have been involved in 40 blast cases across the country.
