Terrorists on Tuesday evening barged inside the home of a policeman at Hanjan-Payeen in District Pulwama of South Kashmir and shot him dead. The slain Kashmir SPO has been identified as Sameer Ahmad Mir of Hanjan-Payeen where six top terrorists of an outfit linked with Al-Qaeda were killed in an encounter with the security forces last week.
Sameer sustained critical gunshot wounds and was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom, said a police spokesman.
Police has registered a case and initiated investigations in the matter.
The area has been cordoned by security forces.
Meanwhile, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat arrived in Srinagar on Tuesday and reviewed the prevailing security situation along the Line of Control (LOC) and hinterland after the Indian Army foiled a Pakistan Army backed BAT attack on a forward post in North Kashmir.
He has arrived in the Kashmir Valley on a two-day visit to interact with the troops and review the prevailing security situation.
Accompanied by the Northern Army Commander Lt General Ranbir Singh and the Chinar Corps Commander Lt General AK Bhatt, the Army Chief visited the frontier district of Kupwara where he interacted with the troops and was briefed about the recent counter infiltration operations.
The Army Chief was appreciative of the sharp vigil and alertness along the Line of Control and high morale of the troops and further exhorted them to remain alert for any eventuality.
Later in the day, the Army Chief interacted with senior Police officials and discussed the prevailing internal security situation in the Valley. The Army Chief also appreciated the seamless cooperation and synergy being maintained among all the agencies, which he said was the most critical aspect of successful counter-infiltration and counter-terrorism operations.
