The ghost of sting operation continues to haunt the political party in power in Uttarakhand. Very recently, a news channel owner was arrested in the hill state over the allegations of conducting a sting operation to topple the Trivendra Rawat government. Now, Congress claims that they have videos of Trivendra Rawat’s family members.
Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition Indira Hridayesh disclosed last week, in the state assembly, that she has a video of Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat’s family members. Indira failed to provide more details on the video but she demanded to appoint a Lokayukta as gross corruption prevails in Uttarakhand. Reiterating her stand she said, “Those who have the sting videos will make them public soon. Had the state government formed Lokayukta in Uttarakhand, the videos would have reached the Lokayukta office.”
The Congress attack comes after the failure of Trivendra Rawat government to get the Lokayukta Bill implemented in the hill state. As an election promise, the BJP had promised to appoint a Lokayukta within six months after voted to power. The bill was tabled in the state assembly in March last year and after receiving objections was sent to the Select Committee of the House. It is said that the Select Committee has submitted its recommendations on the bill to the state government, but despite this, the Trivendra Rawat government is showing little zeal to implement the bill.

Now, the BJP is speaking in a changed tone on Lokayukta. Uttarakhand Chief Minister constantly says, “There is no need for Lokayukta as the state government is acting strongly against corruption.” With the fresh controversy breaking out, Trivendra Rawat ducked it by claiming that the Congress leader has lost her temper due to defeat in the recently concluded local body elections.
Congress has created problems for itself by making claim about the video. No opposition party will leave any chance to hit the party in power. The challenge before Indira Hridayesh is to prove her claim. Earlier, the Harish Rawat government too had to face challenging situation due to a sting operation.
Congress MLA and party's nominee for Kedarnath bypoll Manoj Rawat said if elected, he would raise the issue in the state assembly and seek answers from the state government for the reasons to dole out contracts to outsiders.
In a significant move, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on Wednesday partnered with the Uttarakhand government to generate Rs 200 crore in business for more than 50 villages located along the India-China border.
