The principal Opposition in the state assembly, Samajwadi Party, has slammed the Yogi Adityanath Government in Uttar Pradesh for announcing a meagre State Support Price (SAP) for potato of Rs 650 per quintal.
SP President Akhilesh Yadav in a statement here on Saturday said that due to BJP’s anti-farmer policies, Annadata is being exploited at every step.
“BJP rule has wreaked havoc on the potato farmers. Distressed potato farmers struggled in queues to keep their crop in cold stores even during Holi festival and even the chief minister is too insensitive to this. Potato farmers are getting low prices for the crop while input costs are increasing. The farmer is living in despair and trouble,” he said.
Yadav said, “Instead of buying potatoes from farmers on MSP, the BJP has fixed the price of potato at Rs 650 per quintal as a relief. Apart from the rent of tractor trolley, fertilizer, medicine, irrigation, token money and store charges, along with labour of the farmers, potatoes should be purchased at the rate of at least Rs 1500 per quintal”.
The SP president said the farmer is neither getting a reasonable price nor there is a proper arrangement for storing potatoes.
“The farmer’s night is being spent outside the cold storage. Potatoes are not stored in the cold storage on time even after getting a token. Where should the farmer complain as the officials have become deaf and dumb,” he said.
Yadav said the BJP government is neglecting the farmers and has made farming completely ruined and unviable. “How will a loss-making farmer think about sowing the next crop? Potato itself will give a crushing defeat to the BJP government in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, promising to double the income of farmers,” he said.
